Seattle, WA  The second annual Tour of Architects will take place on March 19 & 20, 2011.   The event will showcase architects who have designed projects on Bainbridge Island as well as Mercer Island, WA.  Inclusion of other neighborhoods will be considered.  A designer’s marketplace and trade show/conferernce will be produced in conjunction with the event.

The 2010 Tour of Architects took place on Bainbridge Island, with 17 architects showcasing 24 projects.  The event attracted attendance of over 500, and raised awareness of architects in the region.   Projects included a Leed Platinum residential project, an educational “Treehouse,” a kitchen remodel and a waterfront art-inspired villa.   Many architects reported postive results in months following the tour, so organizers are expanding the territory in an effort to expand awareness of architecture in Seattle.  An extensive PR, marketing and advertising campaign will be utilized to promote the event and participants.

Architects are invited to submit projects for considerations.  More information is available at www.TourofArchitects.com. Excellence in design and accessiblity to the projects will be key considerations for acceptance.    

Tour of Architects is a GEM, LLC production.  A portion of ticket sales will be donated to non-profit organizations.

Seattle, WA.  Celebrate Green Living at Town Hall on July 27 with Ed Begley, Jr. and Matthew Coates

Heroes don’t come around every day. Actor, author and environmentalist Ed Begley, Jr. has been advocating for environmental issues and reduced consumption of fossil fuels long before it was fashionable. 

The actor who is sometimes referred to as “The Green Giant,” is coming to Seattle on July 27 to help celebrate green living at Town Hall. This special event, entitled “Leading the Way Toward a Sustainable Future,” will include a special presentation by Ed Begley, Jr. entitled, “Live Simply So Others Can Simply Live.”   Also on hand will be award-winning Seattle Architect Matthew Coates, founder and principal of Coates Design Architects, who will deliver a talk about the recently certified LEED© Platinum residence which his firm designed for Ed and Joanne Ellis.   The Ellis Residence is the first single-family residential project to achieve LEED© Platinum, outside of the City of Seattle.  Construction by Smallwood Design Construction.

With a subject such as sustainability, walking the walk is just as important talking the talk.  To that end, attendees are encouraged to walk, ride bikes or take public transportation to the event.  Ed Begley, Jr. says, “My transportation hierarchy is:  1) walking, 2) riding my bike, 3) public transportation, 4) electric car, 5) hybrid car.  I always travel with this hierarchy in mind.”

Coates Design Architects and Ed Begley, Jr. are Leading the Way Toward a Sustainable Future at a Special Event Commemorating LEED© Platinum Certification  

SEATTLE — Coates Design Architects has been awarded LEED© Platinum Certification for a home designed for Ed and JoAnne Ellis of Bainbridge Island, Washington. Coates Design is the first firm to achieve LEED© Platinum Certification for a single-family residence in the state of Washington, outside of the city of Seattle. 

LEED© Certification is the international standard for measuring building sustainability, and the certification demonstrates that a project is truly green.  LEED© Platinum is the highest possible level of certification. The Ellis residence incorporates many green technologies, including geothermal heating, photovoltaic energy collection, vegetated roofs, rainwater harvesting and passive-solar strategies that minimize energy use. 

To commemorate the LEED© Platinum Certification and raise awareness about sustainable living and green building, a special event is planned for Tuesday, July 27 at Town Hall in Seattle. The event, entitled “Leading the Way Toward a Sustainable Future,” features environmental activist and actor Ed Begley, Jr., as the keynote speaker. Begley starred as Dr. Victor Ehrlich in the medical drama St. Elsewhere and now hosts his own television series about sustainable living, called “Living with Ed.” Tickets for the event are available now at www.CoatesDesign.com. 

Award-winning architect Matthew Coates, founder and principal of Coates Design, is recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council as a LEED accredited professional. In 2005, Coates won the Cradle-to-Cradle Home Competition, an international design competition that attracted over 700 entrants from 42 different countries. In 2007, Coates was profiled by the American Institute of Architects in their national publication. This summer, Coates Design will participate in “New Edge, New Blood,” a showcase of innovative design work by leading architectural firms, curated by the Seattle chapter of the American Institute of Architects. 

Coates Design has several projects under development, including the Bainbridge Art Museum, the Island Gateway Sustainable Development, and the “Grow” Affordable Housing Community Development. Recently completed projects include the Kids Discovery Museum, a children’s museum on Bainbridge Island, designed to achieve LEED© Certification. Coates Design is rapidly developing a sterling reputation for progressive design and innovative material use to achieve the highest standards in environmentally sustainable and conscious architecture. Coates Design was founded in 2004 and has offices in Seattle and on Bainbridge Island.
